About Anne

Anne Curtis is devoted to teaching in a student-centered way: each student's unique needs are taken into account.

Her goal is for you to feel more at home in your body through mindful awareness, compassion, and light-heartedness.

In 1996, Anne started studying Yoga and began to devote herself to Yoga as a way of life after using it to heal from an upper back injury. She had studied classical ballet and modern dance for 14 years in Berkeley, California. After her undergraduate studies, she earned a Ph.D. in biology at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

In 2003, Anne did her Iyengar-based teacher training studies in Palo Alto, California with Larry Hatlett. She then completed the Yoga Alliance 200 hour certification with Val Spies, founder/director of The Lotus Pond in Tampa, Florida.

Anne founded Yoga Within in 2010. In 2014, Anne completed her 500 hour certification with Val Spies. Anne is currently a member of The Lotus Pond Advanced Teacher Training staff.

Anne began her meditation practice in 2008 and attends silent meditation retreats in both the Vipassana and Zen traditions regularly. Anne continues to grow her meditation practice with a view toward incorporating this discipline more fully into her life and into her yoga teaching.

“Anne is a flexible and supportive teacher, providing well thought out modifications for the individual bodies and circumstances of each student, based on her deep knowledge of muscle patterns. Her classes reflect this knowledge, as well as her joy, humor and spirit.

She is truly an inspiring teacher.

We have come to know that no matter how we are feeling physically, mentally and spiritually when we start the class, our spirits will be lifted and our bodies feeling both well exercised and alive when we leave. We feel so lucky to have found Anne as a teacher.”

“I have been studying with Anne for almost 10 years, and have had experience with other yoga teachers as well. Anne is thoughtful, careful, and student focused.

Her approach is an integrative one, drawing from classical Iyengar practice, Krapalu, Pilates, Physical therapy, and other bodywork practices. Anne always modifies her instructions to fit the particular needs, abilities, vulnerabilities, and goals of each student.

Anne is whimsical and brings genuine warmth and a sense of humor to the practice, making her classes fun. Studying with and learning from Anne Curtis is a special gift!”

“In her personal, kind, patient, sensitive, intellectual, and funny way, Anne has helped me to stretch and strengthen my body, to improve my balance and posture, and to accept my body as it is every day.

Anne is an eloquent teacher. She describes the muscles, tendons, fascia and joints we are working on and how each posture helps. And she keeps everyone smiling through the effort with her great sense of humor.”
